WELCOME TO YEAR 5
Welcome to Year 5 – the year we transition Into Upper Key Stage 2. This is our penultimate year, and we intend to make the most of every minute of it! Like in other year groups across school, we LOVE it when our learning all links together as it helps us to make vital links, joins and connections between the knowledge we acquire. Our teachers in Year 5 love to engage us fully in our new topics each term! Our lessons hook us so much that we KNOW we are going to love each topic and gain so much from it.

What are Year 5 learning?
Our overview Caritas connection is:
Recognising the difference between rights and responsibilities
Mission— The Church, the Christian family, is made up of smaller Christian families called dioceses. Each diocese is led by a bishop. The bishops continue the work of ‘the twelve’, the apostles, who continued the work and mission of Jesus. Jesus is the head of these families. He is the head of the Church. There are other Christian families which are not part of the Catholic Church. Ecumenism is the word used for promoting unity among Christian churches. One of the final prayers of Jesus was that all Christian families might be one.
This term we have introduced your student to Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly and illustrated by Laura Freeman in which they will learn about the achievements and determination of these four iconic women at key moments in American and world history. This provides the inspiring context for children to write for a range of purposes and for different formal and informal contexts.
We have been learning how to write newspaper reports and we are currently working on writing our own newspaper reports about the success of the moon landing and the role the four women played in making it successful.
In class, Year 5 have be focused on developing their rapid recall of multiplication and division facts and then applying this to solving one and two step word problems.
This term we will be focusing on Earth and Space, and Forces. Children will describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the Sun in the solar system. They will also learn about the force of gravity and identify the effect of different types of resistance between moving surfaces.
In art, the children will be developing their skills in block printing. This is linked back to our previous art topic of rural and cityscapes. They will design a cityscape on a foam block to make prints. We will also create some space art using designs influenced by the artist William Morris.
PE will be on Wednesdays and Fridays for Year 5. This term we will be learning hockey and orienteering.
Reminder: School PE Kit should to be worn for all PE lessons; this includes black plimsolls/black or white trainers, black or navy shorts and a white t-shirt. Jewellery/watches are not to be worn on P.E days and long hair must be tied back. Please note, any children who are unable to take their earrings out will not be physically involved in these sessions. They will ‘take part’ by observing the lesson and assisting the class teacher.
