WELCOME TO YEAR 5

Welcome to Year 5 – the year we transition Into Upper Key Stage 2. This is our penultimate year, and we intend to make the most of every minute of it! Like in other year groups across school, we LOVE it when our learning all links together as it helps us to make vital links, joins and connections between the knowledge we acquire. Our teachers in Year 5 love to engage us fully in our new topics each term! Our lessons hook us so much that we KNOW we are going to love each topic and gain so much from it.

What are Year 5 learning?

Design Technology: Children were given opportunities to develop their understanding of more complex free standing structures and how they can be strengthened and reinforced. They gained knowledge and understanding about how to join and shape materials. They applied these skills, using an iterative design process, to create their marble runs.

Science: We went on a trip to the Science Museum to celebrate our Topic ‘Reach for the Stars’. Children enjoyed the 3D IMAX film ‘A Beautiful Planet’ with views of the Earth from the International Space Station. They also had fun doing a scavenger hunt in the ‘Exploring Space’ gallery! And to top off the day of fun, we saw a knight in shining armour on the train journey back to school! “This is the best day ever!” – Year 5.

PE: Our Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) unit covered a range of fundamental skills needed for orienteering, such as agility and endurance, navigation skills and map reading. During the unit, children were required to work as part of a team, to solve a range of problems that focus on collaboration and effective communication. They improved their understanding of maps and learn about the features of an orienteering map and applied this understanding when completing an orienteering exercise. There was a focus on cooperation, communication and teamwork throughout the unit, which are all essential skills needed for outdoor adventurous activities.

PE

PE will be on Wednesdays and Fridays  for Year 5. This term we will be learning hockey and orienteering.

Reminder: School PE Kit should to be worn for all PE lessons; this includes black plimsolls/black or white trainers, black or navy shorts and a white t-shirt. Jewellery/watches are not to be worn on P.E days and long hair must be tied back. Please note, any children who are unable to take their earrings out will not be physically involved in these sessions. They will ‘take part’ by observing the lesson and assisting the class teacher.
