What Are Year 4 Learning?

Religious Art:

When studying John’s Gospel (13:4-9, 12-15) we looked at the different interpretations by artists of this scripture. We considered the differences between that of Giotto’s ‘Christ washing the Disciples’ feet’ circa 1305 and Koder’s ‘Jesus washes Peter’s feet’, 1925.

The children were drawn to Koder’s work with one child saying, “ I feel the warmth and love of Jesus in this painting.”  Following discussion and song,  the children then chose to express the love shown by Jesus as ‘The Servant King’ through their drawings.

Art:

This term in Year 4 we studied the work and techniques used by the artist Dawn Ng. The work of this Singaporean multi-disciplinary visual artist spans a wide range of mediums and scales.

Her body of work revolves around the concept of time. Having explored her ideas we decided upon using one of her techniques which involved freezing a solution, allowing it to thaw and observing the result, which was recorded and later viewed on  a time-lapse video.

We poured powder paint, water-based paint and glitter into small pots thereby creating many layers of both texture and colour, which was then frozen. These ‘casts’ were allowed to thaw on  a large canvas ( a tray). We then created prints by gently pressing a sheet of cartridge paper on the paint and then peeling it away. Each resultant print was unique in its form.

On viewing their artwork, comments from the children included:

“This reminds me of a beach with a colourful tide coming in.”

“My print represents my emotions, the gold sparkles are for happiness.”

“It has a rough texture but is also shiny and so looks like the solar-system.”

“Definitely intergalactic with colour.”

PE

Please ensure that your child always has the correct kit in school. Earrings are not to be worn for PE lessons. If your child cannot remove their earrings independently then please ensure they are removed before school. PE will take place on ...

Home Learning

Home Learning is given to the children each Monday and needs to be returned by Friday morning. Spellings and times tables tests are conducted each Friday.

Reading: The Reading Records will be checked every Friday. Each child's book should be signed by an adult at least three times every week. Children do need to bring their Reading Record in every day as we endeavour to hear a selection of children read daily.

Times Table Check

In early June, the children will be taking part in the national Multiplication Tables Check. They are expected to know all the times tables, up to 12 x 12, by this point. Please ensure your child practises regularly. Logging on to and using TimesTables RockStars will help with this.
