Reception

There are 2 Reception classes at St John Fisher which open onto a newly refurbished outdoor learning environment. We were very lucky to have received the funding for the area in 2019 and it’s grand opening was held in January 2020; it is a proud accomplishment for the whole school. The children free flow between their classrooms and the outdoor learning area, where there are opportunities to be further develop their learning.

Dont forget to check our "All Year Groups" page for additional whole school resources and homework.

Expectations

Starting school is a huge step for young children and it can be quite difficult for some.

Our expectations by the end of the year are first and foremost that your children are happy and settled in school. We would expect them to have grown in independence and confidence as well as being more social and happy to express themselves. These skills are vital in helping your children to achieve the Early Learning Goals.

There are 17 areas of learning within the Early Years curriculum and these can be seen in detail via the government website. (LINK)

Topics

Autumn 1 and 2- All About Me
This topic is a great opportunity for the children and staff to get to know each other. The children are encouraged to share photos of their families and this opens discussions about the different types of families we are part of. The children this year enjoyed creating self-portraits using a variety of media as part of our learning of similarities and differences.

Spring 1- Space
This topic allows us lots of opportunities to be creative. This includes model making, designing their own aliens and planets and role playing two fantastic space stories: Whatever Next! and Aliens Love Underpants. The children learn about the different planets in our solar system and facts about space objects including satellites and stars.

Spring 2- Superheroes
Summer 1- Dinosaurs
Summer 2- Under the sea

Religious Education
As a Catholic School we follow the Come and See Scheme of work. Further information about this program can be found in our RE policy. We have daily prayers and collective worship, where the children learn key prayers, bible stories and sing hymns. Reception join in with whole school masses throughout the year, starting from the second half of Autumn term.
