Meet the Governors


Mr Hugh Arthur - Chair of the Governors

Hugh spent his working career as a solicitor in the City of London where he specialised in advising large companies on their pension schemes.  Educated at Cardinal Vaughan School in Kensington, he is married to a recently-retired primary school teacher and for the last 30 years has been a parishioner at Brentwood Cathedral. As the new Chair of the IEB, Hugh is looking forward to working closely with the staff, parents and pupils of our school.

Mrs Maria Shepherd B.Ed (Hons), NPQH, M.A - Vice Chair of the Governors

In my professional life, I have spent over 30 years as an educationalist, working largely in the Catholic sector. For the last 22+ years, I have been a Senior Leader in Catholic Primary Schools with 16 years’ headship in 2 different schools, one in Kent and one in Thurrock with some time also spent as an Advisory Head. During my second headship, I studied for my Masters in Catholic School Leadership.
In September 2017, I became the Primary Link Adviser for the Brentwood Diocese, working with a large number of schools, including St John Fisher.  Since April 2018, I have been the Deputy Diocesan Director of Education for Brentwood. I was an IEB member and look forward to continuing to support St John Fisher a Foundation Governor.
Currently, I am also an interim Foundation trustee of the Christus Catholic Trust.
In my personal life, I have been married for 30 years, have 3 grown up children and am an active member of my home parish, St Anselm’s in Dartford.


Miss Maureen Scahill

I have spent 37 years teaching in Catholic schools before my retirement nearly two years ago.
During this time I spent 12 years as Deputy Head in Woodford Green before returning part time as a class teacher.
During my teaching career, I have had responsibility for a variety of Curriculum areas.
At present, I am a Pastoral Assistant in my church in Ilford and play an active role in Parish life. 
I am greatly looking forward to supporting St John Fisher Catholic Primary as a Foundation governor

Mr Dave Coxell

I was born in Epping and have very fond memories of attending St John Fisher with my brother as a child.
I have spent 23 years in the Met Police, and am currently a Detective Inspector in the Specialist Crime Directorate.
I have previously been responsible for units such as Domestic Abuse, Child Protection, Gangs & Firearms and have been both a tactical and strategic multi-agency lead in Safeguarding and Child Protection for East London.   
My family are committed Christians, and active members of the community in Loughton.   
I have two children, a son who already attends SJF and a daughter who will be following shortly.
In my spare time,  I enjoy open water swimming, being outdoors, and antiques.

Mrs Lyndsey De Oliveira

I spent much of my career working in the City for Morgan Stanley where I held varying roles broadly covering people and project management, which afforded me a wide range of finance and business skills.
Since having my children, I have returned to work more locally and my current role predominantly focuses on analysis of business process, improving efficiency, cost reductions and standardisation.
I am a parishioner at St. Edmund of Canterbury, Loughton and have been from youth and my two daughters are in years 3 and 6 at St. John Fisher.
I look forward in earnest to working alongside the St. John Fisher community and supporting their continued development as a Foundation Governor.

I have worked in Catholic schools in London for over 15 years now and I have held positions as a senior leader for the majority of that time.
My areas of responsibility have included Safeguarding and Child protection as well as overseeing behaviour in school. In my current school, responsibilities involve line managing of a number of departments to ensure curriculum, resources and targets are monitored and implemented correctly.
I also oversee numeracy across the school and have responsibilities concerning data and assessment. 
My current school is also an all through school so I have an insight and can offer support and guidance from both a primary and secondary perspective.
I am a resident of Loughton and attend St Edmund of Canterbury Catholic church.

Mrs Karen Burrowes

I have been a senior administrator for over twenty years and I currently work in the Corporate Human Resources team at CGI, an IT consulting company. I have been employed by CGI for 12 years and my roles have included being part of the Corporate Communications team, Internal Audit and Company Secretariat.
My previous administration roles encompass payroll, HR, Office management, Accounts, Customer account management & Project management.
I have lived in Loughton for over forty years, I am married with a daughter currently in Year 6 at St John Fisher. I am a Parishioner at St Edmund of Canterbury in Loughton and I am delighted to have the opportunity to support the future of St John Fisher Primary school as a Foundation Governor.

I work for a construction consultancy specailising in Cost and Project Management and have been a quantity Surveyor for 20 years with prior experience in construction management and computing.
My education was entirely within Catholic schools in Waltham Forest.
My family and I are parishioners at St Edmund's in Loughton and both of our children are pupils here at St John Fisher.
I am the local authority representative on the board and am excited to work with the school family on the schools ongoing development.

I have spent my whole professional career in IT, most recently as an IT Consultant, working in the Finance sector for large Corporate Finance organisations and also Financial Regulators.
My family are members of St Edmund of Canterbury Parish in Loughton and we have 3 daughters, 2 of which attend St. John Fisher and one who has recently left to continue her higher school education at Trinity High School.
Outside of work I am a keen long distance runner and enjoy watching the children stay active across a multiple range of sports.
I am grateful and excited as Parent Governor to represent parents and carers in shaping and supporting the schools ongoing development.

Mrs Elizabeth Laysell - Assistant Headteacher

I have spent over 30 years teaching in primary schools and I have to say that I still enjoy it every single day.
I started my career in Tower Hamlets in East London where we used to live and later moved to Harlow where I have taught and been a senior leader in several different schools.
I trained as an Early Years teacher but have taught right across the primary range. In my personal life,
I am married with 3 children, two of whom are teachers.
